Biographical note

Kit was born on Merseyside in 1945.  He preached his first sermon as president of the Youth Fellowship in the Church of Scotland at the age of 17.  He led a theological discussion group at Glasgow University and then went on to Oxford University, where he was secretary of the Student Christian Movement.  In London he joined the Methodist Church, and served for 25 years as a Church Secretary and Circuit Treasurer in Brixton (inner city London).  He was for more than 20 years secretary of the Brixton Council of Churches (Churches Together in Brixton), which brought together black-led and white-led churches in that ethnically mixed area.  The Council of Churches was closely involved in police-community relations (before and after the Brixton riots of 1981) as well as working on homelessness, provision for young people and the running of a specialist Job Club for jobseekers with literacy problems.  For six years he wrote on philosophy and theology for the Guardian newspaper under the wing of its respected religious affairs correspondent Walter Schwarz.  He is now a member of the Methodist Church in Ireland and of the Open Christian Network.
